DIY Medallion Christmas Ornaments

Welcome to Day 1 of the Holiday Craft Party! Today is all about ornaments! I drug out my much-beloved scrapbook paper, and got busy making DIY Medallion Christmas Ornaments! I'm sharing the tutorial on the blog! | The House Down the Lane

Hi, friends, and welcome to the Holiday Craft Party! Five of us bloggers got together to create five themed holiday projects, and every. Single. One. Will be posted this week! Whoo-hoo! #HolidayCraftHullahaloo #OhYeah

Holiday Craft Party Day 1 ~ Ornaments

Today’s posts are all about ornaments!

The first thing I did was decide on a color scheme for my Christmas decorations: red, green, white, and black. Then I spent some quality time on Pinterest to get my creativity mojo primed.

I decided to create something out of scrapbook paper, because I have the most beautiful scrapbook paper in black and white. I also wanted some fun texture on our tree.

I knew just the project….

DIY Medallion Christmas Ornaments!

I love how these turned out!

Now, let’s get to the tutorial so you can make your own!

How To Make DIY Medallion Christmas Ornaments

This is a long tutorial, but don’t be intimidated. These are actually easy to make! It’s just that writing out the directions took A LOT of words and pictures. :0)

Let’s start by gathering our supplies.

Supplies

Here’s what you’ll need to create these ornaments:

  • Patterned Paper in Your Choice of Colors and Patterns (I like these Patterned Papers)
  • Scissors or a Paper Cutting Tool (I like the Stampin’ Trimmer from Stampin’ Up)
  • A Way to Score Your Patterned Paper (I used the Stampin’ Trimmer, but you could also use a ruler and a capped pen if you don’t have a scoring tool; bring your patience if you go this route!)
  • Heavy-Duty Adhesive (I like this one)
  • Border Punches (Optional)
  • Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue
  • Brads or Other Embellishments for the Center of the Medallion
  • Hole Punch
  • Ornament Hangers

*If you’re a paper crafter, you probably already have all of these supplies on hand, so it’s a great option for an inexpensive or free project!

You can also adjust this project to work for you and what you have on hand. Another great way to make it inexpensive!

The How-To

*First, make sure you’re working on a surface that won’t be ruined if you get hot glue on it. Or place a protective cover on the surface.

*Also, plug your glue gun in so it can be warming up. And make sure it’s within arm’s reach of where you’re working (you’ll have to do it one-handed once we get to that part).

Start by cutting 3-4 strips of patterned paper along the longest side of your paper (if you’re using 8 1/2″ by 11″ paper, you’ll cut along the 11″ side) in your choice of width.

I used 12″ x 12″ patterned paper, so it didn’t matter which side I cut on.

I used several different widths between 3 to 6 inches. The wider your strips, the more strips you’ll need. For example, I used four strips when I cut them in 6″ widths, but only used three strips when I cut them in 3″ widths. Make sense?

If you’re using a border punch, you’ll want to do that now.

Once you have your strips cut and your border punched (if you’re going that route), you’re going to score them, so that you can accordion fold them.

I varied my scoring measurements from 1/4″ to 3/4″ depending on the width of my strips. For example, I scored at 1/4″ increments on my 3 inch strips and 3/4″ increments on my 6 inch strips.

If you used a border punch, you can also use that as your measurements. For example, if you used a scallop border punch, you can score at each scallop or every second scallop.

So, score your strips, then accordion fold them.

Now, we’re going to attach the strips together, but we have to make sure the accordion folds line up.

You’ll want to attach them like this:

This is important because the medallion won’t lay correctly if we don’t match up the folds.

If you do end up with a “wonky” accordion fold, you can just cut one of the folds out and reattach.

Now, attach the remaining edges of the strips, so that you have a circle.

Once you’ve attached all of your strips, you’re going to stand your circle on its side.

*If you’re using double-sided patterned paper that has a different pattern on each side, you’ll want to decide which pattern you want to be on the front of your medallion. Place that pattern on the outside of the circle.

Now, gather up the top of the medallion and push it down to the table.

Grab your glue gun and fill up the center of the medallion with glue. Don’t overdo it, or you’ll have hot glue everywhere (I have the burns to prove it!). :0)

Push the accordion folds into the center and hold them there until the glue sets.

*If you’re using a brad for your center embellishment, go ahead and push that into the center. You could also cut the prongs off with a wire cutter and glue it on after you’re done with this step. I tried both approaches, and they both work fine.

Punch a hole or two (to have it hang correctly) for your ornament hanger or slide your ornament hanger trough the holes in your border punch (if there are some).

And now hang it on your tree and marvel at your crafty prowess and your gorgeous DIY Medallion Christmas Ornaments! #YouHaveSkills #CraftRockStar #YourTreeIsAwesome
