What do you get when you combine glass ball ornaments, rub-ons, and a few special details? Gift Tags That Will Make Your Packages Sparkle! | The House Down the Lane

Welcome to Day 2 of the Holiday Craft Party! Five of us bloggers got together to make a different themed project every day this week {M-F}. So. Much. Fun!

Holiday Craft Party!

Today’s posts are all about gift tags!

This year, I wanted to do something unexpected. I happened to find a stash of Christmas rub-ons in the basement and wanted to use them in some way. After a little thought and a few failed ideas, I found one that worked: Gift Tags That Will Make Your Packages Sparkle!

The unexpected part is what they’re made of….

Glass Ball Ornaments!

Now, let’s make one!

How To Make Gift Tags That Will Make Your Packages Sparkle

Like always, you’ll need to round up some supplies first.

Supplies

  • Glass Ball Ornaments
  • Rub-Ons
  • A Rub-On Transfer Tool (Mine is a Popsicle Stick – Fancy!) :0)
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Embellishments
  • Tags or Card Stock, Ink, and a Stamp
  • Hole Punch

The How-To

Apologies in advance for the quality of some of these pictures. As I said in this post, I clearly need more practice photographing glass, then throw in some iridescence, and I’m sunk!

The first thing you’ll want to do is decide which rub-on you want to use. Mine came on a sheet of 15-20 rub-ons. Once you decide which one you want to use, cut it out.

Now, clean your ornament well with a glass cleaner. If you don’t remove all of the dirt, grime, and finger prints, the rub-on won’t stay put. Once again, I learned this the hard way.

Decide on the positioning of your rub-on on the ornament.

Carefully peel the backing off and place it on the ornament.

Use your rub-on tool to transfer the rub-on from the paper to your ornament. This is the most difficult and tricky part. Move slowly and smooth the rub-on, so you don’t end up with any air bubbles or areas where it folds over on itself.

Remove the transfer paper slowly and carefully. If you find any areas that didn’t transfer well, go back over them with your tool.

I had a little trouble with this one….

I struggle with the words, because there’s no forgiveness with them. My trees got a little off, but I could still make them work. Not so the words!

I did have better luck with the next one.

*If you do get some fold over, but the rest of the rub-on is fine, you can scrape the folded over part off with a razor blade scraper and clean that area up with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol.

Now, for my favorite part: embellishments!

I added a few self-adhesive rhinestones and filled the ornament with small red card stock strips that I “distressed” by folding them, squishing them, and wadding them up. Very technical terms. :0)

There are endless possibilities for embellishing these ornament gift tags. Let your creativity go crazy!

The final piece is the actual gift tag. You could purchase tags, but I chose to make mine.

I punched out a tag shape with one of my paper punches.

Then I used my ink and stamp to add a “To” and a “From.”

Just punch a hole in your tag with a small hole punch, remove the ornament hanger from the top, and string the tag onto the ornament hanger.

Because these ornament tags shouldn’t get a lot of handling, I didn’t add anything on the top of the rub-ons. I’ve only used rub-ons on decorative items that don’t require a lot of handling or cleaning. I’ve heard some people say that they used a clear sealant to keep the rub-on in place. Keep me posted if you try that!

I just strung the ornament onto my black and white gingham ribbon. If you’re using thicker ribbon, you could tie the tag on with twine.

And that’s the how-to for the Gift Tags That Will Make Your Packages Sparkle!
