DIY Snowflake Door Hanger with Embroidery Hoops

It's Day 4 of the Holiday Craft Party and the project of the day is wreaths! My contribution is a DIY Snowflake Door Hanger with Embroidery Hoops! | The House Down the Lane

Hello and welcome back to the Holiday Craft Party! It’s Day 4, and I’m feeling a little sad, because our crafty, festive week is almost over. I guess we’ll just have to make the best of it, right? :0)

Holiday Craft Party Day 2 ~ Wreaths

Today’s posts center around wreaths!

I sifted through many different ideas for this project, but as soon as this one entered my brain, I knew I wanted to do it….

For Day 4 of the Holiday Craft Party I created a DIY Snowflake Door Hanger with Embroidery Hoops!

This project involves a little bit of cross-stitch, but if I can do it, you can do it.

Now, onto the how-to!

How to Create a DIY Snowflake Door Hanger with Embroidery Hoops

Let’s start off by getting all of the necessary supplies together.

Supplies

These supplies are all easily accessible and affordable!

  • Embroidery Hoops {I used 6″ hoops}
  • Fabric in Your Choice of Color
  • A Cross-Stitch Needle
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Snowflake Cross-Stitch Patterns {I found tons of free patterns available by searching Pinterest; you could do a different type of image, too.}
  • Straight Pins
  • Wide Ribbon
  • Floral Picks or Other Accents
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue

The How-To

*The cross-stitching takes a little time, but I found it to be very relaxing {I’d forgotten how much I LOVE to cross-stitch, so watch for more projects involving cross-stitch to pop up on the blog}. :0)

*The hardest and most tedious part of this project is removing the paper template from your stitching. If you know any tips or tricks for transferring templates to dark colored fabric, please share them…PLEASE!

You could also use light colored fabric and transfer your template to that fabric by holding it up to the window and tracing it onto the fabric. The black fabric created a few challenges with this project!

Okay, now that you’ve heard all of the caveats, let’s get into the tutorial!

Start out by cutting a piece of fabric large enough to fit in your embroidery hoop and have about an inch hanging outside of the hoop.

Now, search for snowflake {or other} templates online and print your favorites on regular computer paper. Resize them, if necessary, so that they fit inside of your embroidery hoop.

Pin your template to the fabric in your embroidery hoop, thread your cross-stitch needle with embroidery floss, and start cross-stitching!

*I used a #5 embroidery floss. It was a little thicker than I wanted it, but I went with it.

Once you’re finished cross-stitching your pattern, you can start removing the paper template. I gently pulled away any large pieces of paper.

Then I used a seam ripper and a pair of tweezers to remove the small squares below my stitches.

I had originally planned on creating a wreath with the embroidery hoops, but once I discovered the amount of work involved in the cross-stitching and removing of the template, I switched plans. Quickly.

I ended up doing a vertical door hanger, and I’m actually really happy with it! Here’s how to do that:

The first thing I did was trim some of the fabric from outside of the embroidery hoop, then hot glue what was left onto the back side of the embroidery hoop. This gives the project a very clean look.

Lay out your piece of ribbon on a long table or a clean floor.

Position your embroidery hoops on the ribbon. Play with the layout until you’re happy with it, then hot glue the hoops to the ribbon. Just make sure to only put hot glue on the hoop where it actually touches the ribbon. Otherwise, you’ll be gluing your hoop to your table. #BeenThere #DoneThat

Now add your accents!

I tied a big bow with the ribbon and had a pine cone and berry floral pick.

I laid everything out how I wanted it, then I hot glued it to the ribbon.

This project took some time and was a little more work than I bargained for, but I love the end result so much that it was all worth it. #CallMeCrazy #GoAhead

There are a couple of things you could change on this project to make it a little less time and energy intensive:

  • First of all, see the middle snowflake and how it has straight lines? You could do that for the whole snowflake. I personally like that look a little better than the traditional cross-stitch, it’s much easier and quicker, and it’s easier to remove the template with this type of stitch.
  • You could also purchase snowflakes and glue them or stitch them onto the fabric.
  • Or, as I mentioned earlier, you could go with a lighter fabric and trace your template onto the fabric and not mess with the paper removal piece!

  2. Oh, this project takes me back to when I was a little girl! I used to do all kinds of cross-stitching with my grandma and great-grandmother….like way WAY back! What a cute and unique item to display on your door. I love how you used three different snowflake patterns too!

  3. Tiffany, this is beautiful!! My mom used to cross-stitch when I was in gradeschool, and I even did my own little projects for a while. I’ve noticed that cross-stitching seems to be making a comeback, and that makes me smile 🙂 I think the white snowflakes on the black fabric is stunning – they pop so much! Even it it was a hassle 😉
