DIY Wall Art Flip Flop: Nature-Inspired Canvas Creations

DIY Wall Art Flip Flop: Nature-Inspired Canvas Creations |The House Down the Lane

One of my favorite things about blogging is the amazing community! Recently, I joined up with a group of bloggers, and we each created DIY Wall Art {check out that post HERE}, then many of you linked up your own DIY Wall Art projects. All of the projects were so creative and gorgeous!

We had so much fun doing our DIY Wall Art that we decided to do a DIY Wall Art Flip Flop where we created our own version of one of the projects from the DIY Wall Art post and link ups! So. Much. Fun!

As soon as I saw the DIY Canvas Wall Art post from Ruthie of Refashionably Late, I was inspired to add some nature-inspired DIY art to my boring family room wall!

DIY Wall Art Flip Flop: Nature-Inspired Canvas Creations

I started out with two canvases.

I followed Ruthie’s tutorial and painted stripes on one, then added a fun deer head that I picked up at the craft store. One of the poor guy’s antlers was broken and hanging on by a thread, so I scored it for 70% off!

With a little TLC and lots of craft glue, I was able to fix his broken antler!

I painted him all black {Ruthie and I must be on the same DIY wavelength, because all I had on hand was chalkboard spray paint…}.

But with the plaque and his head being black, his head and antlers all but disappeared, so I repainted his head, ears, and antlers gold. I don’t use much gold in my decorating, but I LOVE how it looks!

I painted the second canvas with chalkboard paint {I’m sort of obsessed with chalkboard paint right now}.

I’m terrible at freehand drawing and handwriting, so I designed the image below in Picmonkey and used graphite paper (similar to carbon paper) to trace the image onto my canvas. Then I traced over the graphite lines with my chalk pen! If you want to see this in action, check out The DIY Mommy’s post and video, How to Make Beautiful Chalkboard Art {Ruthie also linked to this video in her post}!

Then I got to hanging my new creations…

But it needed something more. The canvases, which were 14 X 20, weren’t quite big enough for the wall.

So, I started rooting through all of my stowed away supplies and found a beautiful frame that I picked up at the thrift store for a mere $1.25. I gave it a coat of chalkboard spray paint, then distressed it. I love how it looks!

It was definitely what the wall and the canvases needed! But, yet again, something was missing {this is a common theme in my decorating}.

So, I did some more rooting and found three vintage “V” stamps that I’d also picked up at a nearby thrift store and a grapevine wreath. These items were just what the frame needed!
